RAY F. BADNESS - TUBE AMP SCHEMATIC CIRCUIT MODS, VOL. 1 : Crunchy/Chunky NAM Models

Can't afford that JCM800 on ebay ?

You're not alone. Vintage tube amps are often costly, and the analog circuits don't always integrate easily with today's purely digital rigs like Apple's MainStage app. The world has gone digital, and modeling plug-ins like the Neural Amp Modeler (NAM) provide a simple way to get some tube-like tone without having to get your hands on a tube amp.

While digital modeling doesn't always yield 100% of a given vintage tube amp's character, NAM models can be a quick and inexpensive way to get in the ballpark without the hassle.

Who are these Custom NAM models for ?

They are for modern digital-guitarists who like bands with 4 letter names : ACDC, KISS, SR71, FREE, TREX, OZZY, STYX, TOOL, RUSH, BUSH, etc. You get the idea. If you like classic crunch/chunk in your riffs, then this collection of NAM models might be what you are looking for.

The break-up character can be changed simply by adjusting the input volume knob in the GUI. These models are not intended to be identical to any particular amp or head, just inspirational with some tube-like character.

What's the story behind RFB's Custom NAM models ?

These are NOT haphazard captures of tube amps or heads like many folks are offering. These are virtual simulations of custom tube circuit mods created by RFB. These virtual models are proprietary and not available anywhere else.

The character of the NAM models can be changed by using a different speaker/cabinet impulse response (IR) model. To get you started, a custom speaker cabinet IR model (wav file) is included with the NAM models.

Where do you get the FREE NAM software plugin (VST or AU) to play the custom models ?

At github.

Download Steve Atkinson's FREE NAM software at Github.com/sdatkinson/neuralampmodelerplugin

What if you don't like using complex DAW's to run VST/AU plug-ins ?

You're in luck ! For dirt-simple usage, Steve Atkinson's NAM software runs standalone on Mac's and PC's (no DAW required). The NAM models also plug-in to Apple's MainStage app, and standalone VST plug-in players. Another simple option is to use the FREE audio editor Audacity. And if you like stomp boxes, some of them support NAM models. There is even an online player at www.thenam.online

How do you use the NAM Graphical User Interface (GUI) ?

After launching the NAM software/plug-in, there are 3 easy steps :

  • Select your NAM model by entering the name in the top box of the NAM GUI.
  • In the bottom box, select the name of your speaker/cabinet impulse response model (i.e. the wav file included with the pack).
  • Adjust the input volume knob to change the break-up character of the model. NOTE : Single-coil and humbucker pickups typically produce different break-up dynamics and character.
